Songwriters Welcome
Lyrics
SONGWRITERS WELCOME
Verse 1
I've been working on a song for days,
And I just can't get it right,
I took a walk to clear my head,
On a street I'd walked a hundred times.
A weathered sign read "Songs Through Time"
Like it had always been there before,
And underneath, in faded letters:
"Songwriters Welcome"
So I walked through the door.
Verse 2
A bartender slid a beer my way,
"We've been waiting for you, Kid."
"Who is it you're looking for?"
"Just one good song," I said
"Then you've come through the right door."
He led me through a crowded room,
Then suddenly I stopped and stared,
On center stage stood The King,
White jumpsuit shining, his crooked grin.
I never felt so much awe,
It actually made me shake,
The bartender took my elbow,
"Come, you don't want to be late."
Verse 3
The Chairman of the Board was singing,
Always in his own way,
While the Rat Pack sat ringside smiling,
Like they'd never gone away.
Verse 4
He led me to a quiet room,
Where an elegant couple waltzed,
Then I recognized Material Girl,
Dancing and singing with Che.
Verse 5
Satchmo's gravelly voice stopped me cold,
Natalie was singing with Nat,
Across the hall The King of Pop
Moonwalked effortlessly across the floor.
Verse 6
My head began to spin,
I'd never seen such greatness,

A stranger paused to speak
As if he'd read my mind,
"Are we supposed to compete with this?"
He smiled and said,
"Wrong question."
Verse 7
Before I could say another word,
The bartender appeared.
"Come on, Kid.
I'll show you what the future holds."
One final room came into view,
Four young men gathered there,
Rehearsing Abbey Road,
Like they'd never played it before.
Final Chorus
I always dreamed that someday
I'd walk into a crowded room,
Hearing strangers sing my song
As if it were their own.
But tonight I'm feeling humbled
By the legends gathered here,
And standing on the shoulders
Of those who came before.
